Larry Pampel's love for wine dates back decades.
A wine collector for about 30 years, Pampel boasts a 1,600-bottle collection of French, Italian and American wines.
"I have always been enthused about how 10 winemakers could take a single grape and make something different," says Pampel, who co-owns Whyte Horse Winery in Monticello along with his wife, Connie, brother Don and his wife, Denise.
"Even though we are performing science in here, wine is more of an art form than it is a science."
Four generations of Pampels work together at the winery.
Featured at the operation at 1510 S. Airport Road are a wine tasting and sales room in a renovated 1886 farmhouse, a banquet facility and a modern wine-making operation. The winery will have gazebo and vineyard seating available in summers for weddings, art fairs and music events.
